As most of you treefinders will know-A Coat of Arms was presented to just one person, and no one else can use it -apart from a direct male heir, with a slight
change on it, But nowadays we all tend to use it as" our Family Arms."
What I would like to find out is-- Who was the original Ravenscroft Coat
of Arms presented to, I have been told it could have been Warrin De
Ravenscroft of middlewich about 1225,
Any one got any ideas,???
Thanks Ron Ravenscroft

Many thANKS FOR YOU VERY QUICK REPLY
Yes i have applied to the college of arms, and they state that they can
do a search--£75-- being an OAP, I thought i would try the Parish Chest
first and save myself £75, but it looks like I will have to send them a
cheque, ---thanks anyway---worth a try.

A book of surname origins (most larger libraries with a reference section would have a copy), usually indicates early mentions of a name.
If you cannot get to a library, you might try a search of The National Archives - PCC wills on documents online and also Access to Archives to see what early references exist to the surname, and from there make a judgement as to which you think may be worth checking the next bit.
Armed with that information (and depending on where the name occurs), you might then try various visitations or there are heraldic books containing details of various arms - sometimes available at libraries or via sellers such as The Parish Chest.
Other than that (I don't know how accurate the site is), you might try Cheshire Heraldry (it turns up using a seach engine).

Google books search shows
"The family of Ravenscroft" by William Ravenscroft, Raymond Bathurst Ravenscroft published 1915 / Publisher: London : Mitchell, Hughes and Clarke.
and
"The Ravenscroft coat-of-arms and pedigrees" by Ruth Thayer Ravenscroft - published 1949 Publisher: Colorado Springs, Colo., 1949.
I tried to track these books down but had no luck
- Perhaps if you could track down one or the other it might have the answer you are after.
Good luck!

I have "The Family Of Ravenscroft" - it traces the various strands of the Ravenscroft family back to 806 although it is really only complete from the 11th century.
