    Default Huckbuck / Hucktuck Suffolk

I have a direct line ancestor who lived in Wickham Market Suffolk. IGI has two alternative years of birth for her 1753 or 1756 and the names Mary Ann Huckbuck or Hucktuck. She married Herman Garrett who is from the same line of Garretts as Elizabeth Garrett Anderson but this was before the Garrett family became prosperous (in fact our line didn't!). Does anyone have any thoughts about this surname. Although she was born in Wickham Market it is not a name I can find anything about so I wonder if it is foreign, Dutch maybe and I am aware that the ports of Ipswich and Harwich are near.

Are these submitted or extracted entries?

If submitted treat with a great deal of suspicion.

Perhaps one child died and a second was baptised with the same forename?

Best thing to do is check the parish register. Is there a mormon church (LDS) record centre on your island where you might be able to hire the film of the register? Check to see if the local FHS has produced any transcripts of registers.

How can I tell if they are submitted? Sorry to be dense.... Perhaps I can look up the parish records in case it is a mis-transcription.

No I think the only records locally are Guernsey's BMD and census. My daughters live very near the Kew archives so I could look next time I am visiting.

When you carry out a search and get a list of hits, click on one of them to get the limited amount of information available. On this page you should see a heading 'Messages' in the bottom half of the screen. This will either contain something to the effect that it is an extracted entry (relatively trustworthy but do double check the original to confirm spelling, date and for any additional detail), or that it is a submitted entry (load of ol'squit).

These entries in the IGI are member submitted, as opposed to Parish Register extractions. Sadly, member submitted records are notoriously unreliable. The marriage date is probably reliable, but the name of Huckbuck/tuck looks mighty peculiar, especially as this appears to be the only example of this name that I can find. That suggests a mistranscription, and you would be wise to check the original register.
The suggested baptism years are presumably estimates based on the assumption that the wife could have been about 21 - 24 when she married - complete guesswork rarely works out!

If you live somewhere near an LDS Family History Centre, they have filmed the Wickham Market Register, and you can order the microfilm in to be viewed at their centre, for a small fee. You should at least find the marriage, and perhaps be able to make better sense of the name of the bride.

Just noticed, the nearest LDS FHS is Jersey, and that's temporarily closed.

I can do this at Kew can I? As my daughters live near that would be easiest for me.

Before 1837 records are generally in the respective County records office, ie Suffolk, or at LDS (not all parishes). Wickham Market is on their list.

    Hi all,

AS the surname board is only for listing surnames I have moved this thread to the Suffolk board.
