I am curious about the given names of Thomas Beagley Naylor, b. 2 Sep 1805 in Weymouth. For a while he was the Church of England chaplain on Norfolk Island, but he is reported to have died in Brazil.
Why Beagley? The only things I have been able to find out about his ancestry is that his father is reported to have been Thomas Naylor and his mother Elizabeth Dobb -- no Beagleys. Was there a Beagley further back in his ancestry? Was he named after a notable Beagley? -- were there any?

Out of interest I did a search on Beagley in the census records. There are a lot of them covering Sussex, Hampshire, Lincolnshire, Surrey. Mostley Hampshire though, which isn't to far from Dorset!

Possibly Elizabeth Dobb's mother? Not unusual to find a grandmother or great grandmothers maiden name used - especially if she died just before the birth ...

I know it is a couple of years since you posted an entry under Thomas Beagley Naylor but I have only just joined this site and seen the entry. I may be able to give you a clue. I have been doing research on the Earl's Poulett, major Somerset landowners [ but now an extinct title.] Between about 1810 and 1826, when he died, a Thomas Beagley was their land steward, though in total he worked for the estate nearly fifty years. It appears that he was a bachelor and in his Will [which is in the Somerset Records Office] he left most his own wealth to his second cousin Thomas Beagley Naylor. This may have been quite substantial as he owned ten or so cottages in the village of Hinton St George, Somerset.
Thomas Beagley Naylor didn't die in Brazil but aboard ship in 1850 on his way home from Australia with six children [three more sons stayed in Australia]. It appears they were practically destitute as the Church launched an appeal for their maintanance on arrival in England.
If you are still interested in Thomas Beagley Naylor let me know and I will dig out my notes [the above is from memory]

Thanks for your message, Adrian. Yes, I would like some further information if you have it. If Thomas Beagley Naylor was indeed named for an ancestor, maybe I can find a place for him in my Beagley family tree -- and for that Thomas Beagley as well, whom I have not been able to identify with any of the Thomases in my tree.
