i was really interested when i came across this post today. my great grandfather was called charles ernest roberts and i know he was born in Barugh Green in yorkshire in 1870 he married a mary elizabeth ellis from wales and they had two daughters Clara Pollard (nee Roberts) and mary (marie). But we know nothing else about him other than he had a sister who's married name was Shaw.

But this really looks like it could be him .... so excited and so is my mum

Thought I would try and follow the Clara and Ann Roberts from the 1871 census to see when or if they marry and whether to a Shaw. So Clara in 1881

Hi, doesn't look like they are the same family does it?

I know i have definitely found my charles ernest roberts in the 1911 census which says he was born in barugh green which is a small suburb of barnsley. He was married to mary elizabeth ellis and the census says she came from tryddyn my grandma clara roberts always told us that the family came from Mold area of wales, and we have a picture of her, also my grandma and great aunt are named in the 1911 census and the are living in Mosside which is where we know my grandma always told us they lived.so I know all those details must be correct.
All we know of charles ernest roberts from my family memories is that he was born in the barnsley area, had a sister they called 'auntie shaw'
But the 1911 census references (RG10; Piece 4647; Folio 135; Page 30) Barugh Green, Yorkshire) quoted above led me to think it might be the same charles ernest roberts as barugh green is such a small suburb of barnsley, the birthdate fits, but i am having trouble finding any references to them after 1871.

not very good at this geneology stuff yet as i have only just started

Hello Helen and welcome to the forum.
There is a baptism for Charles Ernest Roberts (Source: West Yorkshire, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1910)
It is on the 5 March 1870 at Darton, All Saints, son of Evan and Sarah Roberts of Barugh Green and Evan was a Book Keeper.
    He was baptised privately.

1891 Census at Chorlton on Medlock (Booth Street East?)

Evan Robert, age 55, born 1836 in Mold, Flintshire, Wales. A book keeper - Cashier.
Jane K Robert, age 55, born 1836 in Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales
Charles E Robert, age 21, son, born 1870 in Borough Green; Barnsley. A Mechanic (looks like Sheffield Gauge Maker)
Mary (or May) R Robert, age 8, dau, born 1883 in Liverpool
Mary Ann Jones, age 23, niece, born 1868 in Holyhead, Anglesea. A Servant
Annie Roberts, age 30, niece, born 1861 in Penmain Maur, Caernarvonshire. A Servant

    RG12/3184, Folio 26, page 9
(records held by TNA, Crown copyright)

It would be worth looking on FreeBMD for a death for Sarah and another marriage for Ew/van to a Jane K. ???

Do you think this could be Charles E. in 1901. Here he says he was born 1870 in Parton, I don't know how close that is to Barugh Green but he is a Pressure Gauge Maker.

He was living at 24 Edward Street, Moss Side with his niece Eva Roberts born 1888 in Manchester.
    William Bitton was a boarder.
    RG13/3711, Folio 91, Page 34
(records held by TNA, Crown copyright)

Now we really do need to find him in 1881.

    :
1901 online has it as Darton which seems to be a couple of miles from Barugh Green.

Ah! Thanks, Darton fits with the 1870 baptism post #14.

I think Christanel's find of Clare/Clara Jane in 1881 living with her Aunt Mary Jones does sound the right one. Well it is the best I can find.
Still looking for the rest of the family.

Sounds promising, Evan and William fit the family but we have not come across the Edward before and he was born in Liverpool.
He might be on the 1861 census.

It would mean Sarah died between 1871 and 1881 and he married Jane between 1881 and 1891. Sadly, Roberts is a very common name and it will not be easy to pin them down. There are a couple of Chorlton marriages on FreeBMD to a Jane but I cannot see a Jane K. but though they were in Chorlton in 1891 the marriage may not have been there.
