    Default 1901 Census Grandad in the Jug at Walton

    Hi All,My grandad was in the Walton Prison during the 1901 Census.It said family on his page at Anc. So pressed to print while I had a Coffee with Wife,Got back great thought I, have found some of the family,unfortinately it was all the other inmates in Walton.Can anyone please point me in the right direction to find out what he was in For.He was a news vendor,of own account.Any help would be most appreciated Best Regards Ken B

    Difficult from the other side of the world!

    Was he definitely in Prison, or in a police station? Important question as if he was in police cells he may only just have been arrested, or he may have been in cells for drunkeness, or some similar minor offence.

    If he was in prison do you have any idea as to how long he had been doing time?

    Have you been able to locate him in the 1911 census? - If so was he still inside then? (Same question for 1891).

    Quite a few cases (though they are the great minority) are individually indexed on TNA's catalogue - but it's free to search so worth a try.
    In the word or phrase field enter a surname
    In the year range, enter 1890-1910
    Then search - Does anything look remotely, possibly connected?

    Try searching the local papers - as Geoffers says the 1891 will give you an idea of if he'd been there long.
