Will it not be on the marriage certificate?
I thought it gave maiden name and former married name.

    Hello Audrey,

You could try to obtain the birth certificate for one of the children.

I have had a quick look on FreeBMD and likely candidates for Mary Elizabeth JONES could be:

    Holywell district (which covered Whitford):

    June quarter 1870, volume 11b, page 286
    June quarter 1870, volume 11b, page 305

But might be more likely to be one of these two:

    September quarter 1870, volume 11b, page 257
    September quarter 1870, volume 11b, page 256

You could always order the certificate and use the reference checking facility that the mother's name is Sara(h)

Thanks for all replies I do have the marriage cert for Sarah Jones to Samuel Spencer it just says formaly Jones .it did not even say widow .Samuel had a family to his first wife Ann Loyd and a further 2 children with Sara Jones the oldest born 1873 Jemimer is my husbands grandmother and her birth cert says she was Jemimer Spencer but when her own children were born the birth certs say formally Jones I wondered if Sarah Jones was pregnant with Jemimer when she married Samuel Spencer I did get a marriage cert for a Sarah Roberts to Daniel Jones but it was the wrong one

I would get the birth certificate for Thomas. That should give a fathers name - assuming there was one.
I get the feeling that Sarah might not have been married before. Not uncommon.
