    Hello Paula

I married into the Bland family from Northampton - all shoemakers (factory workers) in Northampton and then Kettering - another town approximately 15 miles from Northampton. I will look into my tree and let you know what I come up with - William Bland is my husbands ancestor

    Hello Mandie

Thank you so much for replying to my post. I am sure that your ancestors and mine are related in some way - isn't that fantastic!
I would be very grateful if you could let me know what information you have. If you have any questions regarding the Blands in the Eastern Cape Souh Africa I can help you. Unfortunately as far as I can see Richard Bland had a fairly unfortunate life in the E Cape. It seems he came out with the 1820 settlers and married Caroline Bonnin. He then landed up in Grahamstwon prison for holding stolen goods and was destined to go to Australia. His wife intervened and pleaded to have him set free. He then joined the Albany sharp shooters only to be killed in 1835 in a skirmish with the local natives at 26. Quite sad actually.
His wife and sister Sarah Bland who married John Slater, youngest son of Thomas Slater, both went on to have very successful lives.
If you would like me to send you what I have I will do that.
Best Wishes - Paula (Bland) Groenewald

    Hi Paula,

    From Northamptonshire Marriage Index 1700-1837:

25 June 1801 at Northampton All Saints David BLAND, Bachelor married Susannah MOORE, Spinster, both of the parish.

FreeREG website has a marriage on 9 December 1836 at Northampton All Saints of a David BLAND & a Sarah BASSFORD. This marriage is confirmed on the Northants Marriage Index except that it shows the groom's surname as BLUNT which is perhaps a transcription error.

    Default David BLAND

Further to the above, there are the following baptisms on the IGI of children to David & Susanna(h):

26 February 1813 at Northampton St Giles Thomas BLAND son of David & Susan
14 June 1815 at Northampton St Sepulchre David BLAND son of David & Susan
3 August 1818 at Northampton St Sepulchre Charlotte BLAND daughter of David & Susan

Going further back there is a baptism on the IGI of a David BLAND on 16 August 1777 at Olney, Buckinghamshire, parents Richard & Sarah - two siblings given an Elizabeth bap 28 Feb 1774 at Olney and Thomas bap 28 September 1779 who was buried 24 March 781 at Olney. Can't find a Harriet though.
