Good morning everyone,
I have hit a brickwall.
My 2 x great grandad Joseph married Catherine Barnes (Catherine was born in Ireland) in 1862 at South Shields. They had three kids Joseph, Mary Ann and James. I cannot find him on any census, before or after the marriage. I have Catherine with the kids on census 1871, 1881, 1891(Durham) after they were married but never Joseph. I think he died 1871-1881as she is listed as married up until 1871. I dont know where or when he was born but have found another family tree that says he was born abt 1835 in Consett. I have written to the owner of the tree but no reply as yet.
I am prepared to order the marriage certificate if I have to, but would like to find him if I can without it.
Thanks
Cathy

I am sorry but I cannot understand why you should not want to have the marriage certificate of your great grandparents.
Surely it is an essential part of the family tree and I don't understand how you can be sure of following the line correctly without it? You need to know who he says is his father and what age he gives at his marriage.
There is more than one Joseph Naylor in the Durham area.

I agree with Mutley....their marriage certificate would give more clues to follow ie father's names, abodes etc.
However there is a Joseph Naylor age 44 death registered March qtr. 1876 at Houghton vol 10a page 258 which is about 20 miles from Consett.

Good evening,
Well I received the marriage certificate but it didnt help me much. I have Joseph's father as James. What was interesting was that Joseph was listed as a widower. I have tried everything I can think of to find him on any census. I have also looked for marriages and deaths of Naylors in between 1850 and 1862 (when he married Catherine) He was living in East Jarrow, South Shields in 1862.
I would be grateful of any assistance.

There is this family in 1841 living in Houghton.
Ater Naylor 20
Mary Naylor 30
Joseph Naylor 7
James Naylor 5
John Naylor 3
Ann Naylor 11
Mary Naylor 7
Elizabeth Naylor 1
Class: HO107; Piece 312; Book: 2; Civil Parish: Houghton Le Spring; County: Durham; Enumeration District: 10; Folio: 12; Page: 2
The father's name is not Ater but I just cannot quite make it out. The other names fit with Joseph's family, Mary, Ann and James.
What was your James's occupation? This one is a Coal Miner.
Does the certificate give an age for Joseph?

Hi Mutley
It says he is 27 years old. I think it says Puddler at Iron Works.
Yes I saw that census entry and couldnt make it out either. I wonder what Ater is??
Thanks for helping me.
