Hello JohnF,
It seems that, if we are to help, we need some much more detailed and specific information from you
Like ...
Was the sampler dated and signed? If so, by whom?
Was it a family heirloom?
Precisely what was written on the back of the sampler?
With whom did you start and what were the precise steps by which you researched back to earlier generations?
And why Mat(t)ew Turnbull DRIVER?
And why Tynemouth?
We'd like to help but without more information it seems, unfortunately, to be speculation and guesswork.
The only persons called Mat* T* DRIVER on FreeBMD that I can find (and these may not be yours as the middle name/initial may not have been used in the records) are:
1871 birth Matthew Turnbull DRIVER birth registered at Tynemouth
1897 marriage Mathew (one 't') Turnbull DRIVER marriage registered at Tynemouth; females on same page are Sarah Jane CLARK and Rachel Wardrope WEARS
1934 death Matthew (two 't's) T DRIVER died Tynemouth aged 63
Best of luck,
JAP

You people are so kind and helpful! Many thanks
I have just done a "quick reply" - only took me 3/4 hour and "the system" lost it without trace - it simply was not there when I tried to sign it
Can such be retrieved: where did it go?
So this time it will be shorter
The sampler is a family heirloom and the source of countless wild goose chases!
For a start it was done in 1848 by one of 999 Eliza Coopers exant at that time.
As I result I have a HUGE, totally irrelevant, Family Cooper Tree! (if anyone cares)
Upon its back was writ by my wife's father, when 63, a family tree of 28 names and I will not repeat them all again here just to be cut off again. In any case some of you may even be that old { ;<D) and thus KNOW how reliable is the memory of a chap with 12 brothers/sisters.
The upshot, however is very interesting (and this time around you miss all the boring bit!)
My MOTHER was from the Turnbull and now in my WIFE's ancestors we have a Matthew TURNBULL Driver turning up! All from the IGI and BMD as I do not hold with ancestry.con and its make money attitude above genealogy.
So if you can find out more despite my genealogy and computer button-pressing incompetence, that would be very good of you.
Many thanks
John

So if you have established by whatever means that Matthew Turnbull Driver is a correct ancestor, then as I said, you need his marriage certificate to confirm the wife,
ie
March Qtr 1897 Tynemouth Reg Dist Vol 10b Page 301
Matthew Turnbull Driver
Sarah Jane Clark
This can be obtained from:

signed by "an old bloke with a bad memory"Michael

There is another thread about Matthew Turnbull Driver who married Lilian Young.
If the information in that thread is to be believed then Matthew was not born in 1871 as per the original post in this thread.
And if the 1911 census is reliable then the information given in both threads regarding the birth of Lilian Young in c1875 is incorrect.
