Question Red Line or Red lion

    Hello good people

this may not the place to ask this question so I hope a Moderator will post it into the correct location.

I ahve a 1841 Census for my grt grt Grt Grt Grandfather and family Thomas Searing, they lived in "Red Cross Street St.Saviour Southwark" on the Census the adress is entered as "Red Line" "Red Cross street" St.Saviour Southwarlk.

As my family of 1841 lived in Redcross Street my grt grt grt grt Gandfather Thomas was a according to the Census a "Public House" "his son Henry was a bar man" " and daughter Emma was a Waitress"

all of which leads me to think that "Red Line" was mis-spelt and should be "Red Cross Street "Red Lion" or Red ????

I cant find and public houses in Southwark St.Saviours that fits any possible name, so could anybody shed some light on my quest or am I loosing the plot.

    thanks to all and sunder.

    Paul

Have you tried googling pub history? I can't remember what the site is called but you can conduct a search and post your querie on the site which is dedicated to the license trade.

    There is also
    www.
    deadpubs.co.uk
    www.
    historicaldirectories.org
the latter you can find by surname of the landlord (am I allowed to include the website address??).

I too have a GGG with a pub in Southwark but 40yrs after yours, they turned it into a soup kitchen eventually.

    Hope this helps
    Happy hunting

That's actually an 1861 census reference although you talk of the 1841 census.

The census shows the "Red Lion" at 36 Red Cross Street, St Saviour.

The Red Lion isn't listed in the 1851 London PO Directory that I have. Perhaps it would be worth checking a directory nearer 1861. Perhaps Parish Chest can supply something suitable.

    Thanks Peter

Yes I realised what I had done and that the date was 1861 but I used FMP to get the information I think they two have a couple of problems with years
    but hey.

I thank you for confirming my what I thought, all I need to do is try and find where it was and if there is any entree made for in.

    thanks for your help
    you are a star.

The Post Office London Directory, 1841. [Part 1: Street, Commercial, & Trades Directories] image 241, p 213, at the historical directories, site has the British Lion, landlord James Chivers, at 36 Redcross St. The dead pubs site entry for 50 Red Cross St says "at 36 Redcross Street in 1856". Landlord was indeed Thomas Searing in 1856, Henry Searing in 1869 & 1871.

There is a beer retailer at No 50 in the Post Office London Directory, 1882. [Part 1: Official & Street Directories] Image 580, p557. Comparison with some other businesses in the two directories suggests that the street was renumbered sometime between them. Redcross Street is now called Redcross Way and has been completely redeveloped.
