    Hi Ian
Could you give a time frame for the newspaper look ups please?
There are old newspapers available online
I believe you go to the following and apply for a card.
They have newspapers you can view.
    Good luck

Have you tried going to the Central Library in Manchester? That might be the best, cheapest and easiest method of getting information from old newspapers. I notice that you live in Manchester, which is why I suggested the Central Library - but there may well be other libraries in the area with old newspapers.

Further to Mark's suggestion about Manchester Central Library, their website gives loads of information about their holdings and where things they don't hold can be found!
I notice you also mention Salford and Bury - both those places have good local and family history sections in their main libraries - Salford is here and Bury here Bury Library also have a downloadable guide to family history in Bury - to be found here
All of these libraries also have access to Anc*** library edition for free!

    Hi again Ian
My friend tells me, if you get a library card, they have Gale Newspapers site which includes the North West for 1850.

    Good luck

    Georgie
