    Hi,
There are some Durham BT's here if you have an idea where Joseph was born in Durham.

    Default Joseph Frederick POTTER

Welcome to the Forum. I can only find one Joseph POTTER in the 1851 census with a Durham connection and he is shown with a birthdate of c1847 but he is still around in the 1901 census, so he is no good.

Do you have your Joseph's marriage certificate or any other documention which shows the name of his father to help us narrow down the search.

I saw that one, Astoria, but there's also a death of Joseph POTTER Darlington Mar 1843 24 35. Looks like the same little chap.

    Default JOSEPH FREDERICK POTTER

Hello and thank you all so much for your kind welcome and all your kind help. It is so fantastic!! The total info I have was Joseph was "born 1842 Durham England". Not much to go on eh!! According to his death certificate he arrived in NZ approx 1860's and family info says he came via Australia.

I have both his marriage and death certificate which show little information except that he was aged 77 at date of death 2.7.1919 in NZ and that he was born in England. I have a heap of info on him and his family since arriving in NZ as he was a very successful goldminer but am hoping to be able to get back a little further. I was thinking about shipping/emmigration records. What port would be the most likely for emmigrants to Australia back then and does anyone have any good sites I could check. His parents may have came out with him when he was a young child to Australia. Just don't know any more than this. I do appreciate all your kind help... Teesakiwi

What an interesting background to be researching. If you have Joseph's marriage certificate, that should give the name of his father, and his father's occupation, which might give us a better chance of finding the family over here in County Durham.

Hi Thomasin, Unfortunately the marriage 'certificate' does not show his parents, however, I am now trying to get what we call here a marriage 'printout' which may hold more info. Will keep you posted. Thanks for your help...Teesakiwi
