    Default Medical records from 1948

Hello. My grandmother bled to death in Shrublands Nursing Home @ 2 Sydenham Road, Croydon on April 1st 1948 due to an operation for an ectopic pregnancy.

I have contacted Croydon Local Studies today and unfortunately they do not have any records of Shrublands.

Where could I turn to next to unearth some facts regarding her death? Her name was Mary Dooley.

Is the home listed in the Hospital Records Database? Try either just searching for Shrublands - or just searching under its location.

Does the death certificate indicate an inquest?

You may well find that no more information is available.

Sometimes an ectopic pregnancy does have dire results. It is when the fertilised egg lodges in the fallopian tube rather than travelling down into the uterus. As it grows there is generally not room for it to develop and it causes pain before it ruptures. Even nowadays it is sometimes undetected until rupture and is therefore always a medical emergency. If it is found in time an operation to remove it will save life. The greatest risk is peritonitis and haemorage. It is only modern medicine and blood transfusion that prevents death in these cases. M
