    Hi Viv,

The only marriage for a James RODDIS to a Mary at about the correct time on the Northants Marriage Index is the following:

10 October 1794 at Chacombe James RODDIS & Mary LAWRENCE, both of the parish, by banns.

This fits in relatively well with the baptismal date of first child William to your James & Mary - see what you think.

    Hi Janet
Thanks brilliant, thank you very much. Now for a very ignorant question--- where can I see these records: In all of the info given before to Shaz there have been many references given, how do we access them?
    Thanks again Viv

The Marriage Index cds are available to purchase on Northamptonshire Family Tree website. FreeReg hold a lot of baptisms/marriages/burials for various Northamptonshire parishes - you can search to see which parishes and dates they cover - and Family Search Pilot site also have quite a few Northamptonshire records. Sandy's information looks as if came from the Parish Registers - you can order microfiche of parish registers direct from Northants RO which I have done in the past but I found their system a bit long-winded and rather expensive - but no doubt she will confirm this or not, plus their processes may have changed by now as it was a few years ago that I used their system.

Iy`s quite a while since this thread was started , and I`ve just found this story in the news.

    Sept 27 1867 Newspapers.
On Saturday 21st September at the Colney Hatch Railway Station three children belonging to one family were cut to pieces. They were upon one side of the line and as a train had passed they ran across the railway, just as the 11.55 am express up Midland was passing through. The result was that the children were dismembered and smashed, their blood and brains being scattered over the engine. Their remains were collected and conveyed away to await an inquest. No blame is attached to the company, as although it is a level crossing a bridge has been erected for the safety and convenience of the public. The mother of the deceased , the widow of a gentleman` coachman resided at No 4 Ada Cottages, where her husband died fourteen months ago, leaving her with six children, three out of that number being killed as described. The shock to the poor woman was so excessive that it is feared she will not survive.
Dr Trevor is attending her and that gentleman gives but little hope of her recovery. The inquest was held at the Railway Tavern, Colney Hatch on Tuesday when after a long investigation the Coroner (Dr Hardwicke) gave the resolution that The Jury empanelled at the Railway Hotel, to inquire into the deaths of Fanny Eliza Roddis, Mary Ann Roddis and Henry Albert Roddis have returned a verdict of accidental death, are of an opinion that all public crossings and roads on railway lines should have proper superintendence and protection for the prevention of such accidents in the future. They also consider this crossing to be unsafe, and the jurors further wish to state the case for the mother of the children to be a fit one for the consideration and compensation of the railway company.

After coming across this in the papers I was curious about the tragic family, and a few searches found much more.

Fanny Piggott, daughter of Thomas Piggott coachman had married John Roddick son of William Roddis , a baker on February 13th 1852 at St Pancras Church, witnesses were Rose Piggott and Thomas Roddis.

A daughter Harriet Capel Roddis was born Dec qtr 1853 Wycombe distict, followed by the baptism at St Pancras of Jessie Roddis born 7 Dec 1856 bapt 15 March 1857 Tarington Mews.

The family moved and son Thomas was born at Colney Hatch and baptised on March 30th 1859 at Friar Barnet, he mustn`t have been expected to live, and sadly he was buried on April 16th aged 2 weeks.
More children followed , all baptised at Friar Barnet.

Born April 18th 1860 bapt May 20 Fanny Eliza, DIED

Born July 9 1861 bapt 20 July MaryAnn Roddis DIED

Born Feb 9th 1863 bapt March 15th Arthur Edward

Born Nov 2nd bapt Dec 4th 1864 Henry Albert DIED

Burial 1866 May 9 th aged 42 John Roddick Friar Barnett
