Default Original Post was in 2005!

    Hi All,

I have only just now noticed that the original post of this thread is dated 2005. So Kate Terry may well have solved (or given up on) her puzzle by now!

In case not, here are some more points.

    1. A search for
    Grisewood
at British History On Line at
    http://www.british-history.ac.uk/
finds lots of information about their residences including Daylesford House (purchased by Harman GRISEWOOD in 1853).

    2. I note that, in another post, Kate said that Harman MIDDLETON was born in Hogmarket, illegitimate son of Caroline MIDDLETON. When I looked up Harman GRISEWOOD in the 1841 census, I happened to notice that Hogmarket was the address on the following page ...

    3. If Caroline was a servant, I guess it's quite probable that she was sacked immediately it was known that she was expecting. Pretty harsh times!

    Default Caroline MIDDLETON

In case this puzzle is still a puzzle, I'll add a bit more (in earlier posts Kate had not traced Caroline's background).

    I haven't found Harman MIDDLETON in 1841 or 1851.

But in 1861, Harman/Harmond MIDDLETON is lodging in St Andrews, Hertford, as an Apprentice Slater.

Can it be a coincidence that three houses away is a John MIDDLETON, Widower, 68, a Slater and his unmarried daughter Rebecca, 39.

A search for John and Rebecca in the 1841 finds them in Hertford - John 45 a Slater, Elizabeth 45, Rebecca 20, Charles 15 a Slater, William 13, Henry 11, Louisa 7.

A search of the IGI finds the following children of John MIDDLETON & Elizabeth Ann.
    St Saviour Southwark
    Henry George bap 1816
    Eliza 1817
    John Henry 1818
    Caroline 1820
    Rebecca 1820
St John and All Saints Hertford
    Zelia 1822
    Charles 1823
    Ann 1826
    George 1826
    William 1827
    Alfred 1828
    St Andrews Hertford
    Henry 1829
    Sarah Louisa 1833

The marriage of the parents is probably:
John MIDDLETON & Elizabeth Ann SMITH, 1813, St Mary Newington, Surrey.
John's birthplace given in 1851 as Waltham Abbey, Essex and Elizabeth's as St Saviour Surrey.

Thanks to all who have replied and helped with this puzzle. Sorry for the long silence, I have been off having children of my own!

This is all still a puzzle, and one that I return to periodically in the hope of inspiration and more transcribed records being available online.

But, with especial thanks to JAP, for the first time in a long time I have a clue to follow, so thank you, I will try to track that down!

    Kate
