Without knowing when 'that time' was, it is difficult to say. Do you have any idea at all as to a decade, or century which might help to narrow things down a little?

Do you know when your chap was born and where?

Local newspapers would probably carry details of the incident.

    Hi Buckyjohn,

I know that you do not have a date yet, but what sort of time are we talking about here?

Is this the ol'bor shown in the 1881 census at

    RG11/4764 f54 p22
    Rodney Street, Sculcoates
Edwin HOLBROOK, hd, mar, 32, Policeman
    Emma Holbrook, wf, mar, 39
    Mary E Holbrook, dau, 10
    Charles E Holbrook, son, 1
    (all born Hull)

    and 1891

    RG12/3931 f91 p16
Still in Rodney Street with wife Emma, and children Mary E and Charles E

If so, there is a match in the GRO index for a death:

    Sept qtr 1892 HOLBROOK, Edwin - aged 43 - Sculcoates - v9d p106

Interestingly TNA's catalogue has a record in its divorce proceedings concerning an Edwin and Emma HOLBROOK but it is dated 1886. The reference to (wx) in this entry means that it was a wife's petition, but the type of petition was unclear. I just wonder if they had problems, got back together and then things went wonky again - did your chap drown himself? A copy of the death certificate may help to clarify things

Further to all the above, interestingly there is a death in the GRO index which looks like it might be Emma, your chap's wife:

    Jun 1891 - HOLBROOK, Emma - aged 49 - Sculcoates - v9d p202

(Do double check all the references given to make sure that I haven't made a mistake in transcription).

Top man Geoffers, I've just managed to get to see the old Hull Dailymail newspaper, headline THE DANGERS OF THE OLD HARBOUR AND DOCKS telling about the inquest of Edwin, his wife was Emma he had only known her for eight months and been married for only two and they where having big problems at home, I don't think it was suicide because the last sighting of him he was having something to eat, was he pushed! may be Emma was after his pension! Many thanks for your help Geoffers you where spot on, kind regards John

    Hello John,

It looks like Geoffers has found your man and you have found the newspaper report.

If the date of the death certificate that Geoffers has found matches up with the newspaper date, it might be worth ordering.

    Good luck with your digging!

In your shoes, I'd want to see what was the verdict as to cause of death on his death certificate.........?
