This has proved a real stumper. My grandfather was a fisherman and so I guess may have missed some censuses. I have a wedding cert from 1922 in Grimsby Lincs that gives his father as John Arthur Wormald, a plumber. But as far as I know Alfred was born in Leeds or Hull and certainly spent time in both but no sign of him or of a John Arthur either. Any ideas gratefully received.![]()

Just double-checking - the title of the the thread refers to Alf Wormald 1870-1931 and you appear to refer to him being married in 1922 (aged approx 52). Is this correct? Was this a second marriage? If so, was he widowed or divorced? Were the witnesses to the wedding related? Did Alfred Wormald have any other known forenames?

How sure are you on 1870 and 1931? Checked the death regs (to see what age was given) and I can't see one for Alfred in 1931 (checked Mar 1932 as well). Maybe I got the spelling wrong.

according to Yorkshire BMD there was an Alfred WORMALD born in 1870, in the Yeadon Sub-district of Leeds, however he appears (1871 Census) to be the son of William & Mary.

Thank you for the responses.
I have a marriage certificate for 1922 at a church that no longer exists. Both parties were widowed and the witnesses on the form are "officials". My mother was born in 1925 and was 6 when her father died ie 1931 possibly 1932 but like Karen I can find no record of the death either as Wormald or Wormold.
Nicolina, there are indeed several Alfred Wormalds or Wormolds born around 1865-75 but none have a father John Arthur.
I am fairly certain that he met my grandmother in Leeds as her history is quite complete, probably he was a friend of her brother who moved to Hull.
My only other lead is that he was a catholic and insisted on calling one of his children Molly which could possibly give him an Irish link.

Okedoke - in order to try and find a starting point...........
Have you been able to identify your chap in either the 1891 or 1901 census - if so, where was he born? Or.............
Do you know who his first wife was and when she died?

Where did you find that Maggie? It certainly seems like the one - thanks for that confirmation to my hearsay evidence.
Geoffers - the answer to your questions is no - Alfred does not definitively appear on any census at all from 1871 to 1911! I have searched using all possible spellings and combinations on all of them. Therefore I don't know who his first wife was either or if there was any issue from the marriage.
He was a skipper in the 1920s but I don't know about WW1 service. Most trawlermen tended to stay in fishing or possibly merchant marine.

If he was a Skipper, you might try the Fishing Officers' Certificates held at TNA.

With the 1932 death and burial found by Maggiemac, you might search the probate calendar to see if he left a will.
Quite a few trawlers and crew were employed in the RNR(T) in WW1 and associated records can be helpful.
