Missing in 1861 Census

I can't find the following family in 1861:

Alfred Russell 28
Ann Russell 27
Jane Russell 5
Alfred Russell 2

1859 They were living at 19 West Street Mile End
1866 " " " " 36 Star Street St. George in the East

They were still living in Star Street in 1881.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Alfred Russell Ann abt 1830 born Somerset, England
Ann Russell Alfred abt 1828 born Gloucestershire, England
Alfred W Russell Alfred,Ann abt 1859
Henry Russell Alfred,Ann abt 1860

Where were Alfred and Ann born?

No Alfred was born about 1834 in Dover Kent and Ann was born about 1835 in Mile End.

I'm not quite sure which pieces, but there were parts of London that were missing in the 1861 Census. I had a piece missing in St.Geo. Hanover Squ. so I suppose there is always a chance that your piece may be missing also. Of course, it could just be that the name was misspelt.

I have tried, but haven't been able to come up with anything...even to looking elsewhere in case they travelled during this period, although given your information, they probably stayed where they were.

I use Genes and cannot find any one of the family either, individual searches, so mistranscription looks less of a possibility supporting the view that they were lost.

I can see them in 1871 in Star Street but I am sorry, nothing for 1861 even searching for first names without surnames.

Have you tried other places such as Scotland? I presume you have, but I certainly didn't expect Henry Cootes to go from Lewes Sussex to Scotland so could be somewhere you just haven't considered which is further afield.

Having said that, I have also found doing my trees that sometimes if you sit on something and wait it does eventually come to you. Hopefully, you won't wait too long

You were right Raineshoe. I've just made a new contact and she said her grandmother said Alfreds daughter Jane was born in Farnham. Well I haven't been able to find Janes birth. I've been looking 1856 in London because the census stated she was born in London.
I then found an Alfred Russell (Plumber Painter and glazier) in two directories living in Lamberhurst in Kent in 1855 and 1858.In the 1851 census Alfred age 18 was a Plumber and glazier journeyman.
So could someone look in the 1861 census in Kent please. The only fly in the ointment is that their son Alfred was born in London in 1859.Does anyone know if there used to be a Farnham in Kent? I know there is one in Surrey. Maybe it is Farningham.

Hello June,

I've looked on the 1861 but the only Alfred Russell of the right age in Kent is a lodger, and an agricultural labourer, in Bexley, Kent. POB is shown as Bexley, Kent. None of the others had the same occupation as the one you found.

I can't find any trace of a Farnham in Kent....Farningham, yes.
