    Question Cady/Cady, Knapp, Birede

Hello, My name is Peggie I live in Michigan in American. I am trying to break a brick wall.

The family I am researching is Cady or maybe Cade in England. My Cady came to American in 1630 to Watertown, MA. his name was Nicholas Cady b. abt. 1619 in Stoke-by-Nyland, Suffolk he died 14 May 1712 in Groton, New London, CT. He came as an appentice with William Knapp, later married his daughter Judith Knapp.

He was the son of Nicholas Cady and Grace Birede. His father Nicolas was born abt. 1588 in England died abt. 1653 in Stoke-by-Nyland, Sufflok, England, Grace was born abt. 1592 in Lethringham, Sufflok, England die in England in abt. 1655. They were married 6 Dec. 1613 in Lethringham, Suffolk, England.

I am trying to get his connections back from his Parents, sibilings, grandparents, etc. Any help would be appreciated. I am not sure of the facts of his parents only what other researches did.

    Thank You,
    Peggie

    Hello Peggie,

welcome to Brit-Gen forums, I am sure that you will like it here, and will be able to get some help with your brickwall.

You do need to verify the facts as you go back, if other researchers have the information, then I am sure that they will not mind sharing the actual source as well as the names and dates. The sources must be parish registers and wills and other parish and legal records.

Caydee, Cadie, Kade, etc all could be the same lines too. They did not care about spelling back then, and the further back you go the wierder some spellings seem! You might not be able to get back further, it depends on if records were kept, and or survive, where the family lived.

You might like to post this query about your family in either the Brickwall section, or the Suffolk board - one or the other. Good luck with your research.

One source that I've found valuable, where there are no parish records, is wills. A wide range of people left wills, from laborers and craftsmen to knights. In Suffolk there are four books published by the British Record Society that list wills proved in Suffolk. I'm not sure what library you could find these at. If you can't find them anywhere, they are for sale at the British Record Society site for £12.50 each, hardly more than the price of a pub lunch in London with two or three pints of ale.

Here are some probate records a bit closer to home. These are from the catalogue of the New York Public Library.

    Hi Peggie:

Your query about Nicolas Cady interests me because I am researching the Nicholas Knapp family from St Mary Bures, Suffolk (please see my post on this forum). The Knapp family from Bures, including a William, William Jr. a Judith and others emigrated to Massachusetts in 1630, so these Knapps may be the ones who married into your family. Nyland or Nayland-on-Stoke is not that far from Bures.

Do you know what kind of apprentice Nicolas Cady was with William. I am trying to establish William's and other Knapps' BMD's and occupations. Check out the site at www.bures-online.co.uk for more info. There is a Chardy family from Bures but that is a bit of a stretch.

    Thanks,
    Paul
