Hi glad I found this site it's great - I've been browsing for a while but thought I'd better introduce myself at last.
I'm Mick Smith and along with my wife we have started to investigate our family tree. We didn't realise how much we didn't know until we started.
Hence joining this BG-forum. I've recently become very interested in my father's war record and have had some success in tracking down his service records. This was very lucky as apparently most of them were destroyed in 1940. I now know the regiment he served in and the medals he was awarded.

His name is L./C. Samuel Smith, Lond. Regt. 592699 (frmly.5278) and he was awarded the military medal. He joined the army in 1911 in the Middlesex Regt and his number was 6559. I'm now trying to find out why he was awarded the MM. So far no luck but we are going down to the National archive at Kew this Saturday - any tips anyone

    regards

Hello Mick and welcome to Brit-Gen

Well, you have certainly come to the right place for help in researching your ancestors. If you type military medal in the search box in the blue bar at the top, all the threads with those words in will appear. You had better get comfy as I have just had a look and there are rather a lot of them!

Also, have a look at the Military - Army forum as well as the WW1 forum. Should keep you occupied before your trip to Kew.....

    Have fun!

Somebody found my Husbands Great Uncle being awarded the Military Medal in the Times therefore we had the date the action took place, from there I managed to view the war diaries of his regiment.

Unfortunately for us it wasn't recorded what he actually did just the names of the men, sometimes it was an act of bravery of several people and they were all awarded a medal.

    Good luck

    Regards
    Jill
