Hi All,
I'm not new to family history, just to this site. I began in 1974 when I lived in Canada. I've been in UK for much of the period since. I'm now trying to fill in gaps, and there are still plenty. Current query concerns a business partner of possible brother of my direct ancestor, and identifying him, to see if I can confirm the sibling connection. William DALE was a cheesemonger in Southwark from at least 1817; he is succeeeded at the same address in trade directories by George DALE from 1823 (he's my ancestor). From 1822, William was in partnership with John MARSHALL (Marshall & Dale, provisions merchants ) with offices at Hayes Wharf, Tooley St.,London. He inconveniently died in 1833, leaving me unsure of 1) his age and 2) his birthplace. His will mentions only his widow Hannah who I have traced up to her death. There were no children. So I turn to John Marshall as there were neighbours of that surname in the parish of their birth, North Grimston, East Riding of Yorkshire. George was born in 1790 and William 4 years earlier. Can you help me find info on John Marshall, please. The business of Marshall and Son is still listed in 1851 directory but I haven't had success in finding him alive in 1851. I don't know his age or where he lived, nor his son's name. I also don't know how William became a cheesemonger - presumably he served some kind of training or apprenticeship. Any help would be appreciated. Or am I flogging a dead horse? Persis

Oh, we specialise in reviving dead horses. The solution may not be instant, but someone will spot something...

PS I'm going to edit your title since the main name in the message isn't in the title! While you wait and hope for help on the Dale & Marshall chaps, why not tell us about the others?
