Ship Inn Wingham, Anchor Littlebourne, Kent

Hi,

I'm looking for any information on the publicans who ran these pubs - the Ship Inn in Wingham and the Anchor in Littlebourne, Kent during the 1940s to try and tie down the movements of some recently found ancestors.

I have a Cyril Barker in the Anchor in 1946 but do not know when he took over this pub. I know there is also a family connection to the Ship Inn in Wingham but don't know yet what it is.

I have just had a quick google and both pubs are still in existence.

Course of action:
You could try contacting the pub landlord/lady to see if it is freehold or managed.

If managed, find out the brewery to which it is affliliated and then contact the brewery archives.

If freehold, the landlord/lady may have details about it's history.

Also, try the Kent Archives to see if they would be able to check any directories such as Kelly's or the Post Office for you.

The phone number for the Anchor is 01227 720229 the one for the Ship is not listed in the local telephone book which is odd as I am sure they were still there the last time if drove past!! They might both be independents but the local brewery in this part of the world is Shepherd Neame at Wye 01233 812297. Not sure if this is any help.

The best source for what you're asking is the licensing registers. I suggest you contact Kent Archive Service and ask what records might have survived.

Thanks for the advice/information. I have found out that the Ship Inn is now a B&B but was run by the Hogben family during my period of interest. I will look at the registers for the definitive answers.

You may be interested in my web site rgarding the pubs of Wingham.
I have been researching all the pubs in that village as well as literally 1000s of others in the area and have a list of licensees of that public house from 1828.
I admit, there my be a few licensees missing from that list, and I do have a Cyril BARKER at the pub in 1946. I believe his son, Robert took over the pub the following year in 1947, but for how long I do not know, neither do I know yet when he started.
I am certainly interested in any further information you have of any pub in the area.
