Default Finding My 3rd GGrandfathers Birth

I have been searching my family tree for the past 10 years and have always had a brickwall with my 3rd gggrandfather William Wicks. I have his birth as about 1796 but to this day can not find where he was born. He must of been born around 1801 as in the 1841 census he is 40 years old and he is living in Batchworth Rickmansworth Hertofrdshire. In the where born column it states that he was not born in that county. However in the 1851 census he is living still in Batchworth with his wife sarah son william and daughter jane. His other son john is living next door as a lodger. John's place of birth is listed as Herts Rickmansworth and the rest of the family is recorded as ditto. Can anyone help?????

He seems to have died by 1861, just Sarah with children William and Sarah. They still say born Rickmansworth.

I cannot find him on the IGI in Rickmansworth but there are loads of other William Wicks around the country.

Do you have any marriage information for them that may give father's names?

Sorry I should have mentioned that he died 1858
He was married 20 May 1823 in the Harefield Parish Church, Harefield, Middlesex, however I do not have this record.

Eliminating the obvious to begin with, have you checked Rickmansworth parish registers in case he was baptised there?

1851 census - Any other WICK(E)S families living in the area and if so, where were they born? If there are several WICK(E)S families mark the birthplaces on a map and see if you get a cluster in a parish or small group of parishes. This may help to target an area to look for William's baptism.

Rickmansworth is on the far south west edge of Hertfordshire, on the border with Middlesex and Buckinghamshire.

You have mentioned Harefield - well, this is less than 3 miles away, but is in a different county. So, it may well be that William was not from Hertfordshire, as stated on the 1841 census, but that Rickmansworth was recorded as being his place of birth in subsequent ones as that was where the rest of the family were from.

You may wish to expand your search to the parishes adjacent to Rickmansworth, but over the border into Middlesex and Buckinghamshire. Have a look here for some starting points.

Unfortunately I do not have access to the Rickmansworth Parish Registers but I am looking for other Wicks in rickmansworth via ancestry.

Just in case you aren't aware, you may be able to hire copies of the registers on film at mormon church (LDS) record centres - though of course that depends on whether or not you have one within reasonable travelling distance.

There is also a marriage of Wm Wicks of Sunbury to Sarah Littlewood at Hanworth, Middlesex on 27 Jul 1823 in Middlesex Parish Records.
