arthur foster was my grandfather.
my dad was put into the workhouse at 1 year old, i have never met any of his family arthur foster was born in staffordshire and died in burnley, i dont know if he ever married all i know is that he had an affair with a lady called may cunliffe in burnley.
sorry dont have a dob or death date.
any help would be very much appreciated.

Can you give us a rough idea of the dates you are looking at?

Do you have your dad's birth certificate, which would tell you where he was born (if you don't know) and Arthur's profession which would make him easier to find in the censuses? Would Arthur have been old enough to be in the censuses? If you tell us when your father was born that will allow us to estimate when Arthur was born and so try to find him.

There are pages and pages of Staffordshire Arthur Fosters in the census.
Some sort of time frame is necessary.

We are not allowed to give names of living people but is your dad still alive? if not, his name would also help.

There is a May Cunliffe born about 1890 in Burnley. She is in the 1891 census as the daughter of James and Isabella.

i do have dads birth certificate, only arthurs name is on it, my dad was malcolm foster born 1939 (he his deceased) the problem im having is may cunliffe was married dob 1900 she registered dad twice once in cunliffe and then in foster so for most of dads childhood he used cunliffe till he was told arthur foster was is father then went and got a birth certificats in foster, which was easy because he had 2 births registered.so the only info i have is arthur foster on dads birth certificate.

sorry didnt mention that cunliffe was my grans married name her maiden name was dewhurst.
i have a death certificate for the only arthur i can find in burnley, i cant confirm if hes my arthur, he dissappeared of the electoral roll in 1958, the death was 1959.
i think were looking at dob around 1892- 1900

To be honest, I have no idea how you can find him on so little information. It'll be impossible to know if you have the right one. Unless there's someone you can ask, I think I'd start by trying to find other sources of information. Perhaps a baptism or marriage cert for your dad which may name his father's profession? There's a good chance he fought in one of the world wars, perhaps even both, so you could try and find a war record that matches. Another thing you could do is try to find a marriage for him.

You could also work from the death certificate you have to see if you can find an Arthur in the 1911 and 1901 censuses and a birth matching those details but in Staffordshire. If you can find one (and can't find anything further forward which shows he isn't yours), you may have your man, but proving it will be very difficult. Also look for Arthur Fosters living near May Cunliffe. I think the best you can do is find the most likely one unless you can find more info on Arthur through a source which links to your dad or May. The move from Staffordshire to Burnley may also help.
