    Hi Paulina,

I have moved your post to a thread of its own so that any replies do not get confused with the others.

In which particular Wiltshire workhouse was it that your great grandfather was born? Then we will be able to see what records are available.

The Wiltshire & Swindon Record Office catalogue for workhouses is online at A2A. Unfortunately nothing useful seems to have survived for 1845 or thereabouts.

All I can think of is searching court records for an affiliation order. You may be interested in the book My Ancestor was a Bastard by Ruth Paley. I believe you can buy it through Parish Chest.

...............or posibly check the parish (baptism) registers in the hope that the cleric was the sort of chap who added notes in his registers, the sort of detail you sometimes (but not often) locate can be found in this thread.
