Perkins

Hello, I have been looking for information on a Stanley Thomas Dickenson Perkins. He married my great grandmother Doris Dumble in 1923. They were engaged when she got pregnant and he seemed to do the decent thing and they brought the wedding forward. EXCEPT he neglected to say he was already married!

I can't find a "Stanley" but I have found a Samuel Thomas Dickenson Perkins. Although Doris married him in her hometown of Ipswich he was from Smethwick which fits with "Samuel" as does his "fathers" name and occupation.

Is this too big a jump? How common would Dickenson be as a middle name? Wouldn't want to sully another person!

Also can anybody answer me why I can find the marriage record if I search Dumble but not Perkins? (could just be me!)

One last question (for now ) - according to a relative he went to prison for this. However we were told he was RAF but his uniform looks army (difficult to see in a B/W photo though) either way would it have been a military matter or the usual courts?

My husband doesn't understand why I want to find information on him.....in some respects neither do I.....I suppose it's become an obsession!

Bearing in mind that his father's name and occupation match plus you have evidence that baigamy occurred, it could well be that he just used a different first name, whilst keeping the initial "S".

Also can anybody answer me why I can find the marriage record if I search Dumble but not Perkins? (could just be me!)

Ummmm..... I found them by searching separately under Doris Dumble and then Stanley Perkins - plus the year for both tries.

I would have thought that it would have been a criminal matter and gone through the usual courts. However, someone else may know better, as I have just had a quick look at the National Archives catalogue under reference code J77 but am unable to find any details of the divorce.

If Stan is Sam I have found decendants but no one knows anything about him!

I will say anyone researching the Perkins from Smethwick I have information on some of the family and hope I can be of help.

Some questions!

How old was Stan/Sam when they wed in 1923? Would he have been old enough to appear on the 1901 census? If so, have you found them? If not, what was his dad's name and occupation, so that we can have a look?

Yes I found him on the 1901 that's when I made the "Sam" connection as I traced his "father" and ordered his birth cert - his "father" was actually his Grandfather! Mother Kate father unknown (but I am wondering if it was a Mr Dickenson!). I also did find him on the 1911 but he was listed as Thomas Perkins! (I had hoped for Stanley but that would have been too good to be true!).
I have looked to see if I could find his first marriage but not knowing which name he used is a hinderance.....I haven't checked the Thomas Perkins though....my next job. He was born 14/7/1897. I've also tried looking for his mother Kate, she was at home on the 1891 census but not the 1901 again so many variants for the name Kate and the people I have been in touch with no nothing of her either except she was one of their decendants sisters. his birth cert said she was a servant so she was probebly back in service.

But I will not lose hope......it's out there somewhere!

I was only able to find Doris on A..ry but like Jan I found the marriage on FreeBMD

also the record shows his name as Stanley T D Perkins for your info the Ipswich Sept 1923 4a 2424

I have found a census record 1901 for a Samuel T D Perkins in the midlands, below, perhaps getting the marriage certificate could help.

First I must apologise - in trying to be as brief as possible I wasn't clear about how far I had gone in my research and now I feel guilty for the searches you have done for me!

I have the birth cert - this is how I connected Sam and Stan (do you know I feel like I know him so well while I actually know nothing!)

I took a chance a couple of years ago and ordered the marriage cert...alas his age does not match and his fathers occupation is "gasworker" also if Stan is Sam his father/grandfather died in 1918 - deceased is stated on the Stan/Doris marriage cert. Therefore I have discounted this one!

However I wonder what you think to this possible match?
Until I looked at the 1911 census I had never searched on Thomas Perkins. I have found an entry that is possible for 1915 to a Florrie L Hopkins. That would make him about 18. Also my mum has always maintained that his proper wife turned up on the doorstep with 2 to 3 children in tow.

OMG Jan I never knew this existed in fact i spent another fiver early hours searching for Thomas and I could have done so for free....thanks for the pointer!

So............on the wonderful website Jan pointed me to I looked for possible children for Perkins/Hopkins and found 6 possibles 4 of which are the right age to be "in tow" in 1923.

Toying with the idea of ordering the marriage cert...............

Thought I would update all you kind people on brit-gen.
Just before my membership at A...y ended I contacted a few people with duplicate treedwellers. Since I made my last post I have been in touch with someone who after sharing some photos IS CONVINCED THAT MY "STANLEY T D PERKINS" IS "SAMUEL T D PERKINS"
I have also sent them a photo of what i've been led to believe are my gggggrandparents and therefore would be his also....he just couldn't believe the family likeness and is convinced they are the right people...I made his year!! I might not have got much further myself but it was so good to help someone else.
