I'm trying to trace some ancestors and cannot find them where they should be. There was rumour my dad remember that they were bargees, then theres also a birth name and 'known by' name to contend with.

The man in question was my g. grandad Albert White b. 24 Mar 1877 at 12 Ridgway Terrace, Nottingham. He married an Emma Drayton.

Apparently at the church! He confessed? that his surname was in fact White and not Clark as he'd always been known. He'd lived with (not sure since what age) a couple called the Clarks who owned a shop at 33 Burgess Road, Nottingham. (btw, these streets are virtually shouting distance from where I live now).

No idea why he took there name, but I have his birth cert and he is indeed White on his b.c. His parents are Richard White and Annie White (formerly Jackson).

So........you'd think they'd be on the 1901 census? nope. They were living at 12 Ridgway Terrace Nottingham when he was born, but theres nothing anywhere in Nottingham.

I've checked for Richard White, wife Annie, and then with son Albert in 1901 and nothing.

So...... I tried Albert Clark despite having a bc with White on, nothing. Albert died 30 Dec 1937 (thats read through squinty eyes from a photo of his grave)

If they were indeed bargees, would they have missed the census? We heard all these tales of psychic/mediums on barges but thought they were just rumours.
