Lizzy,
I'm dishing out
like sweeties this morning.
Too many coincidences to be anything other than the Rachel listed both in the workhouse and with James and Matilda in 1871, in my opinion.
There is the chance that the marriage never made it to the GRO Index, so if I was Roy I'd certainly check out the Strood marriage PRs (2 churches) on City Ark. Right through to William/Rachel's death, whichever died first. This is because old age pensions were introduced in 1908/1909 (though I don't think they were old enough to claim) and you got a higher allowance if you were married and it's a known fact that there is an increase in older couples getting married around that time. Though I freely acknowledge that they could have got married anywhere, especially as in 1881 they were living in Beckenham. They could have been naughty and just gone back to Strood and said 'oh we got married in Beckenham', when they actually hadn't.

Hi
I'd also looked at the Wright family 1881 and wondered but then saw a birth of an Emily Elizabeth Wright N Aylsford Mar Q 1873 and also an Emily Wright Jun Q 1871. - so maybe we need to check these out .
Also have had another look at the Jarrett birth of 1871 ( Emily Elizabeth) and noticed also a death of Emily Elizabeth Jarrett age 0 Mar Q 1872.
So am now wondering if we have the right birth cert for the Emily who married Roy's ancestor.
Am getting even more confused now....

I found the PRs on CityArk. The Emily Elizabeth Jarrett that died in the Mar Q 1872 was buried on Feb 28 aged 10 months. The Birth Cert I have has Emily born 26th March 1871, which would put her at 11 months - a bit too close depending on when the Emily listed actually died. Now I am confused!
The place of abode was listed as Cuxton Road. I have searched 1871 census using street search, but was unable to find any Jarretts listed in Cuxton Road.
I will try and find out how my mum's cousin worked out that the Emily born in Strood workhouse was our ancestor. Hopefully he left some clues behind.

Also looked up baptisms in the Fridsbury PRs for 1850's and found two Jarrett couples with a few baptisms, but alas, no Rachel! So another fallen tree on the road!

Well. . .
Back to square one!
The Emily Elizabeth Jarrett born in Strood Workhouse in Nth Aylesford is not our Emily, but we still cannot find our Emily. She was the only one we could find to fit the age from her first marriage. That Emily died 10 months after birth. Coincidently another Emily Elizabeth Jarrett was born 10 years later in Nth Aylesford and died 12 months later. Not a lucky name in Nth Aylesford!
Working through the three pieces of info I have - Emily's two marriage certificates and the 1901 census, we have the following
Year of birth - 1871 (1st M'ge), 1877 (2nd M'ge), 1869 (1901Census)
Addresses - 3 Rushmore Cres, Clapton Park; 62 Stromness Rd, Southend; 1 North Ave, Prittlewell.
Father's Name & occupation - William, Carpenter; William, Clerk; N/A
Mother's name - not known.
Birthplace - N/A; N/A; Honger, Essex
I am thinking the Honger in Essex may be Ongar.
We cannot find an Emily Elizabeth born in Ongar, and we haven't found an Emily Jarrett with William as a father, either.
Emily's first marriage to Medicus Atkins took place on 6 April 1896. Medicus's first wife died in March qtr, 1896, so he was very quick at remarrying. Maybe Emily worked as a servant for Medicus and his wife?
The marriage certificate contains a W Garrett as the second witness. Maybe a coincidence, or maybe a relative with either of them being entered wrong, perhaps due to pronunciation. I'm not sure about the format regarding witnesses at marriages. Does anyone know if they had to be one witness for each of the couple or could they both be known to just one of the couple?
Anyway, I'm not sure where to look next. Any ideas?
Thanks, Roy

I'm a bit lost as regards this thread, Roy - well it is late
Anyway I'm unsure whether you've seen this census return?

Thanks Marg. I am flat out this week organising stuff for the Good Friday Appeal (Children's Hospital) but will have a look after Easter. I think our Emilt was born a bit later, but you never know. We have very little to go on, although we have worked out that the Emily Jarrett from the workhouse was not our Emily. Cheers, Roy
