Hi
I am trying to find info about my mother's grandmother's family.
Emily Jarrett was born 28th March 1871 to Rachel Jarrett who resided at the Union Workhouse in Strood. Her birth Certificate does not list the father' name, only the mother's name. They both appear in the 1871 census at the workhouse (emily listed as emma, and being only 4 days old - how lucky). Rachel's age is listed as 17. Neither of them appear in the 1881 census as living at the workhouse.
mily married twice, the second marriage producing my mother's father as one of the children. On both marriage certificates she lists her father as William Jarrett, once as a carpenter and once as a clerk.
Am I able to find records of her stay at the workhouse, and if so am I likely to find out her parents names. etc or when she left and where she might have moved to. I doubt that I am ever likely to find out the identity of the father but it would be great if i was able to find out more about Emily's mothers family.
Any suggestions of where to contact?
Roy

I have had a look at the 1861 census to see if I could find a 7 year-old Rachel Jarrett. The only one that I could see was aged 3:
RG9; Piece: 482; Folio: 13; Page: 17
8 Whittaker Street, Chatham (Chatham is only down the road from Strood)
Rachel Merrett, Head, widow, 59, Charwoman, b London, Wapping
Precila Jarrett, dau, mar, 29, b Kent, Chatham
John Jarrett, son in law, 40, Labourer, b Kent, Sittingbourne
Rachel Jarrett, grandau, 3, b Kent, Chatham
George Jarrett, grandson, 1, b Kent, Chatham
This would also tie in with the only Rachel Jarrett that I found, whose birth was registered in Kent in the timeframe:
June quarter, 1857, Medway District, volume 2a, page 308
The naming of William Jarrett as Emily's father on her marriage certificate should be treated with caution. She probably gave that name for respectability.

Emily was born in 1871 meaning Rachel would have been 14 when she gave birth - perhaps explains why she was at the workhouse

Some details - which may or may not be helpful - have been posted in a similar thread which has now been closed. All further information to be posted in this thread.

Frindsbury and Strood PRs are online via City Ark (google).
I searched Frindsbury baptisms June 1852 - Mar 1859 and found baptisms for various children produced by William and Elizabeth, and George and Sarah Jarrett, whom I found on the 1861 census, but no Rachel, and no James and Matilda as parents.
James and Matilda also seem to have been abducted by aliens at the time of the 1861 census. Not having any luck searching on just first names and birthplaces for them and any children.
Pam
See other thread for how James and Matilda might come into the picture.
