Default Richmond 1909-1910 - What sources Exist?

I am looking for a woman that moved to Richmond, Surrey from Norway in 1909, and emigrated to USA in april 1910. In her emigration papers she states that she has been working as a servant in Richmond.

In what sources would it be possible to find a person that has been reciding in this area for such a short time?
Would she have to register with the police or other authorities upon entering/working in Richmond?
Would she have to pay income tax, or register for tax purposes?
Are there other sources? Any hint or tip will be greatly appreciated.

    sincerely,
    Per Helge Seglsten,
    Oppegård, Norway

for someone who lved in an area for such a short period, you will have problems unless the emigration papers show for whom she worked.

She would not have needed to register with police, or anyone else.

Have you been able to find any relatives of hers in the area in the 1901 census?

Did she marry there, or have any children?

    Thank you!
Alvilde Magdalene Henriksen (she probably called herself Magda or Maggie) did not have relatives in Richmond, as far as I know, but she might have been working for people with relations to Norway (Oslo or her home town Lillesand). She did not marry, and I have no evidence to suggest she had any children there. If she did, she would have left the child behind when leaving for USA - which would mean that author Henrik Ibsen's unknown great grandchild could still be living in England, as Alvilde Magdalene was Henrik Ibsen's grandaughter (illegitimate daughter of Henrik ibsen's older, illegitimate son). In the british passenger lists she is listed as native british, but that is probably a mistake by the list keeper. When she arrives at Ellis Island she is listed as norwegian.

Working as a servant was a private arrangement between the employer and servant, records do not often survive. IF you can find her employer, the first thing to do would be to try and establish where they lived, what they did, any possible connection (e.g. nationality) - for this you might try the 1901 census, post office directories, the shortly to be released 1911 census as a starting point. What you find from them then depends on where you look next.

Foregin nationals who came and settled in Britain sometimes obatined British nationality.........try searching the online catalogue of The National Archives (TNA)

In the word or phrase field, enter her surname
Leave the year range blank to begin with.
In the department or series code, enter HO

(HO - abbreviation for Home Office, the government department who dealt with this).

Births, marriages and deaths have been subject of civil registration in england and Wales since 1837. The General Register Office (GRO) index is available on many pay-per-view sites, but try a quick search of freebmd
in case you can make history!
