    Default Oziah Upcot Humphrey

I joined in on another thread about unusual first names and thought that my two - Ozias Upcot Humphrey & Upcot Ozias Humphrey warranted a mention.

I then decided out to curiosity to google these names and came up with all sorts of refences to the Royal Academy of Arts and the fact that there was an artist (known for his minatures apparently) called Ozias Humprey (1742-1810).

I would love to know if this fellow is related somehow.

My Ozias & Upcot were sons of William Humphrey (Of Ottery St Mary) & Anne Brown (Born Somerset).

William (born 1791) was the son of Henry(b1762) & Unity Warram. William had two brothers - Ozias & Upcot !!!

Henry had a brother Ozias (b1764). Their parents are George Humphrey & Hannah Barnes.

Just the repetition of these names makes me wonder if there is some connection somewhere.

I cannot trace George Humphrey's birth date or parentage or siblings.

Would love to hear from anyone else tracing this family and also any ideas as to how I can check George .

Merry Christmas everyone in Glorious Devon & elsewhere.

    Regards

    Joanna

    Default Ozias Upcot Humphrey

    Hi Fiona,

    Thanks for that info.

I have been checking up on the names Ozias & Upcott in the censuses and they are both very rare -to the point that it makes me think they could all be connected.

This could be my claim to fame - related to a famous Devon painter (I have to honest - I'd never heard of him before)

    Many thanks

    Joanna

As an art historian I thought you might like to know the following. This information is from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Your local library may well subscribe to the on-line edition (free) and it has a long article on his life. He unfortunately lost his sight.
"Humphry, Ozias (1742–1810), miniature and portrait painter, was born on 8 September 1742 at Honiton, Devon, where he was baptized on 21 September, the eldest surviving child of George Humphry (d. 1759), peruke-maker and mercer, and his wife, Elizabeth (d. 1790), daughter of Nicholas Hooper of Braunton, Devon.
Humphry died, aged sixty-seven, on 9 March 1810 at 39 Thornhaugh Street, Bedford Square, London, after a short illness; he was buried in St James's burial-ground, Hampstead Road. He died unmarried, but left a son, William Upcott, from his liaison with Delly Wickers (d. 1786). Upcott became a noted collector and antiquary and collated and bound the papers and letters that Humphry had kept meticulously throughout his life (Royal Academy)."
I have come across William Upcot (1779-1845) in my own researches:
"Upcott, William (1779–1845), antiquary and autograph collector, was born on 15 June 1779 in London, the only child of the artist Ozias Humphry (1742–1810) and Delly Wickers (d. 1786), daughter of an Oxford shopkeeper. Five days later he was baptized as William Upcott Humphry, but the patronymic was never used, and both Humphry and Upcott habitually referred to their relationship as that of godfather and godson. In September 1779 Upcott and his mother moved to Oxford, and after her death in December 1786 the boy continued there with his grandmother; Humphry provided some financial assistance, and may have paid for his schooling. In two autobiographical accounts (Huntington MSS Up 693 and 697) Upcott lists eight schools that he attended for periods ranging from a few months to three years; apart from Witney grammar school, all were dame-schools or private seminaries in or near Oxford. Early in 1797 Upcott left Oxford for London, having with his father's assistance secured an apprenticeship with the Piccadilly bookseller John Wright. Three years later he transferred to the shop of Robert Harding Evans in Pall Mall, remaining there until his election on 24 April 1806 as sub-librarian at the new London Institution, where he served under first Richard Porson and later William Maltby."
    Hope you find this helpful

    Scipio,

Thank you for the info on Ozias Humphrey & William Upcott.

I am certain they are related to my family in some way. I am still trying to tie up loose ends.

    Regards

    Joanna
