I have an ancestor who it is said was in the guards who guarded Buckingham Palace. He used to wear a bearskin hat. Can someone tell me what the proper name of this regiment was and if it possible to obtain any information on his membership of that group? He was born 1911 and died 1973 so presumably would have been in the military between the early 1920's and retirement before his death in 1973

The Coldstream Guards
The Grenadier Guards
The Irish Guards
The Scots Guards
The Welsh Guards
As I understand it, they each retain their own regimental records
The Guards Museum should have contact details of each regiment.
Para 7 of this TNA reseach guide has information on the Guards records
