csv and works.
Hi Kirk, can you help me with a question about saving or backing up my ongoing file.
I am entering data with sponsors names in the notes field, using " at begining and end of sentence. When finishing I go to Backup and select my file which I assume is saved as a csv file. When I wish to continue I restore my file using the Msoft Word programme and find that all the " have dissappeared.
I am using FreeGen for Vista.
Can i assume that the file which is saved as csv will be the one which eventually is sent to FreeGen,and that I don't have to keep re-inputing the " "
Hope to hear from you soon,
Dave in Inskip

Dave
Sorry for the delay up to my knees in snow and trying to kep the driveway cleared.
I am a little confused by your question. I assume you mean you are using WinREG. Could I ask which version? Go to the Help on the task bar and select the About WinREG option. It will give you a version number.
WinREG creates a CSV file which is uploaded to FreeREG.
Placing "" around a field is only requited if you are entering a , in the field. Now WinREG1 will not let you enter a , in any field and WinREG does the ''" for you id needed hence my question on which version you are using.
Also WinREG1 automatically saves the file, WinREG you have to save the file.

Not sure If I pressed the right icon here but I need advice regarding transcription. I am re-formatting an Excel burial register from the late 1700's and have come across exclamation marks after some of the forenames, but can't find any reference to exclamation marks in this regard in the "how to". How should they be treated, please?
Also many of the "abode" cells have only a dash in them(not an underscore) which I assume means there was no data, so should the dash be changed to a blank field for uploading?
Thanks for your comments in advance :-)

Latin Entries.
I have read conflicting reports here about what is transcribed, can I say now that I am entering AS IS, spelling mistakes and all,if I can suggest an alternative I put this in the Notes Box.
But my question today is about Latin Entries,do FreeReg want them as is or translated, with which I have no problem.

Latin
A good one
And yes, put in notes to clear any points is a good idea
Names in latin as is, the main mumbo jumbo translate if you can, i guess it says something like the femle * of ,and buried bla bla etc
I guess you know what I mean
I must admit, it is a while since I had a latin one across my desk, the WOR mob of vicars are kind and write in scrawly English

Place Name Sepllings
If a place name is spelled wrong on the Excel file I'm transferring to WinReg, should I use the correct spelling?
I realize transcribers must enter what they see. Does this also apply to me?
Should I leave as is and point out error in Notes?

Okay, no answer so I'm ploughing on.
I'm inserting what the transcriber wrote but making notes of the correct spelling and county. This is Wales, so there's no guarantee that the vicar or clerk could speak or read Welsh.
Logically, if anyone researches an ancestor, that person would use the correct spelling. I leave it up to whoever completes the file for offer to researchers to chose what goes into the final register.
