    Default John Mitchell - Waterloo

I am trying to find out more information on an ancestor named John Mitchell who is listed on the Waterloo Medal Roll of 1815. He is listed as being in the 11th Royal Dragoons. How would I find out about his army record, discharge etc? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
    Many thanks, Roger

The National Archives is a good place to start.

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue

Search for the name and put WO in depart or series code, it will come up with a list of service records for John Mitchells, you can limit date (ie. 1800-1815).
There is one in the 11 dragoons, born in Doulton, Wiltshire

The John Mitchell in the 11th Light Dragoons (not Royal Dragoons, nor simply Dragoons) at Waterloo served in Captain Benjamin Lutyen's troop.

He also served in the Peninsular War and was present at the battle of Salamanca in 1812. He was still alive in 1847 as he claimed his MGS medal in that year.

Many thanks for that info Neil, I am very grateful. Knowing that he was apparently still alive in 1847 gives me something to work on in tracing his whereabouts.
