    Default GILBERT family - Portreath

My gg grandfather James GILBERT b 1832 m Eliza HEITHER abt 1871 - although I am not sure about that date as the first child was born in 1853! and called Eliza Jane followed by 11 more children ending with Twins born in 1876 - Charles and Joseph (Joseph being my g grandfather).

I have found a family on the 1841 census called Heither with parents Mathew 50, Eliz 50 and Caroline 6 all in Fore Street and then another entry for the following Heithers:
    John 20
    Charlotte 20
    Mary 4
    Francis 3
    Emily 15
    Elizabeth 14

ii am wondering if this Elizabeth is my Eliza - can anyone help please.

Have you found James and Eliza's marriage? Do you know her father's name from that - that would help you to decide if this may be the right entry, although as you are probably aware, relationships are not given on the 1841 census.
What about other census entries - she might be with her family in 1851 if her first child was not born until 1853?

Hi,noticed you gilbert post,i've replied to your post on my thread elsewhere on BGF.I noticed you're over Truro, have you thought about cornwall records office, they're up by county hall.
If not i'd say have a look over here in redruth at the local studies centre.
I've been looking at James and Eliza for a while and you'll notice James is often transcribed as Jilbert rather than Gilbert,i have found your Joseph and Charlie down the local studies centre they have Illogan parish registers up to around 1910 i think, and the marriage records contain witnesses, fathers names and occupations as well as addresses, which i've found useful,oh and they have Portreath on the electoral roll too which helps trace movements.

Forgot to say too, regarding James, his birth date varies, his age at death doesn't tally with census info, and his marriage in 1853 gives his name as James Jilbert aged 22.
You need to look for Jilbert rather than Gilbert before about 1880/90 i reckon ok,and his wife was Eliza Butler.James father was also called James, which makes it a bit more interesting too

3rd post!!sorry i didn't do this in the first two but my notes are a bit haphazard.Joseph and Charlie are Vol 5c,Page 250 as i suppose you know.
I have Amelia daughter of James Jilbert, born Sept 1840,it gives her mum as Catherine Veal, there's then a marriage(bear with me)in 1829 for James Jellbert and Christian Vail both of Illogan. The spelling and writing is a bit poor on the church records i'm afraid.
In 1841 James and Kitty(Catherine/Christian) are living at Adams Row,Illogan, along with Amelia aged 8mnths,James aged 9,and 4 others.
In 1861 they're living at Churchtown kitty is Catherine and their ages have jumped a bit,Amelia is transcribed as Emmelia aged 18.
I think James of James and Kitty was born betwen 1831-34,still trying to find him.

thanks for this info - i have been going down a dark alley with James and Eliza marriage as i thought she was Heither!!! i thank Barbara for her suggestions too.
have been checking my records and can tell you that Joseph b 1876 married in Illogan Parish Church 1898 to Annie Reynolds b 1887. they went on to have 13 children - my g father Joseph born 24.8.1901 being the 2nd oldest after Annie b 22.4.1900 - i can list them all for your records sometime.
i have found a record of Kitty on 1881 census living at 22 Robartes Terrace Illogan age 72 and can confirm them on 1841 census too.
i need to bare in mind the name change from jilbert, lelbert, gilbert frm time ot time. most of my research done at FHS Truro but need to get down to Redruth centre sometime.

    thanks again.

Glad to help.I think this is kitty's death,Jul 1885,5c 134,except it gives the age as 65yrs.
I've been digging through my little note book and trying to find anything of use,i found:
Amelia of James and Catherine Jilbert baptised sept 18,1840
    James of " " baptised July 31,1831.

I also have a James Jilbert of Richard and Elizabeth baptised 10 May 1802 which may be Kittys husband, but,it is a very big maybe ok.
