    Question Rebecca Ann Chesser

My first post - I hope I've got this right!

I am trying to find Rebecca Ann Chesser who married George Lord Jackson on 13 November 1797 at St Lawrence Old Jewry, London. I have the Marriage Allegation also, and it seems they married in his parish as she is stated to be of the parish of St Mary le Bow. Both were over twenty-one years. I had a quick search of the St Mary Birth Registers while I was in the archives, but found nothing from guesstimates of her age.

I have since found her death certificate (5 Dec 1853) giving her age as 79, suggesting a birth date of 1773-4.

No other Chessers are listed for England in the IGI, and short of going through every parish birth register for London (and then some!) I am at a loss. Not helped by currently living in Australia!

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

If you have the death certificate, you should have the address where she died in 1853, which will give you a clue to finding her on the 1851 census two years earlier. Though she might have moved from the 1851 address, she might still have remained in the same area.

Most of the 1851 is indexed by the relevant family history society for each district.

You should be able to access the census indexes on fiche, and the census itself on film, at your local LDS Family History Center. These are listed on the LDS site at
    www.familysearch.org

When you find the 1851 census record, it should give you her birthplace. If you are lucky, that may give a clue as to which parish registers to start searching for her baptism. Some birthplaces in census records are very specific, especially for the City of London; others just give London or Middlesex, which admittedly isn't much help.

Is it possible that the name could be CHESSEN or CHESSON? Both are more common than CHESSER, and the IGI has some in Norfolk and Lincolnshire, though for a later date than yours.

Hope that gives you a few more pointers.

Thanks Elly, I didn't think to try the census for her place of birth. I shall push my luck and see if someone in the London forum could do a look up for me, otherwise l shall find the nearest LDS Family History Centre to order the film.

The name on both the Marriage Allegation and Parish Register clearly reads CHESSER, although I have tried CHESTER and CHESHIRE with no luck.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

    Default Hello Cousin!!!!!!

    Hello cousin Sue!,
I am descended from GLJ & Rebecca via their son Georje John who married Margaret Maudslay. They are my 4x grts.
I am just getting back into searching for them after a five year break and am currently posting a message to a London agent to find more details on GJL and family, also their shipping business.
I did find the marriage entry but was not able to get a copy at the time so I would appreciate a copy if possible.
I am willi9ng to send you all of my details if we could swap information.
Which line are you descended from?
    Best regards,
    your cousin,
