    Default Royal Artillery Marriage India

This is probably not the correct forum, but I wasn't sure whether to post on the India one or not.

I am trying to find out how to obtain a marriage certificate in order to trace the father of the bride. I `believe' she was born in Ireland, which will then pose another problem, but for the moment I will content myself with finding her father. I am hoping that Margaret's fathers name will be on the Cert.

    Taken from her husband's paybook:
    Sgt. William PUXTY No: 11816
Enlisted 1.11.1895 in Tunbridge Wells at the age of 19 yrs 7 months.
    Embarked for India, 24.9.1896
Married: 19.3.1902 at Fort Allahabab to Margaret Amelia Mears

(Two children born in Bombay 1902, 1904) before returning home and continuing his service until in 1919.

I have looked at various sites including FIBIS, but have got completely lost on this one, so would be grateful for any leaders on this.

The marriage is in the Index to Army returns of marriages:

    PUXTY, William - Allababad - Year 1902 Page 84

Just to act as a double check that this is the correct entry.
There is a duplicate entry in the index for

MEARS, Margaret Amelia - Allahabad - Year 1902 Page 84

With that reference, you should be able to order a copy via the GRO
Note tht the place of marriage for the groom appears to be Allababad and for the bride it looks to be Allahabad. I think it should be Allahabad.

Bless you Geoffers. Thank you so much for that information, I was expecting a long hunt, and you have saved me hours!

The typewritten details I acquired of William's paybook, actually showed
Allahubad, but I assumed it was misspelt and should have been Allahabad. I'm glad that you agree that it should be Allahabad.

    Thank you so much.

Showing my ignorance again! I've just realised that I don't know whether the certificate is held overseas or here, so I don't know which part to select. As the Index is here, I assume that I proceed in the normal way, is this correct?

It's in this country but in the Overseas Section of GRO. I've never used the online service to order overseas stuff. It used to be quite easy using paper

Edit: I've peeped! The choice of 'England and Wales' or 'Overseas' is the first question in the online ordering process.

Thank you Peter. I followed Geoffers link, which is the same as I normally use, but as the pages are different now since the include the Passport Office, I wasn't sure which section to click on. I did see the section for overseas, and tried that, but it didn't look right, so I thought I had better check. I thought that it was in this country, but just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks.

Actually I have had the GRO bookmarked for a long time, but for some reason, when clearing some old links off, I deleted it so had to Google to find it again.

Thanks for that, I will just copy it over again.
