I have been trying to find a certificate number for my master mariner ancestor William Spofforth ( brn 1848 ) I have looked in Kew and have also been in touch with the Guildhall library. I know my ancestor was 3rd mate in 1869 on a ship 'The Remington' .
Is there another way of tracing him ie; records of ships he was master of ?
He lived in Liverpool.
Thankyou
Denise

Have you tried the National Maritime Museum? This is their standard research guide

Yes I have, it was the museum that directed me to the Guildhall library for the certificate
numbers.

Hi, Thanks guys,
Goeffers I went to TNA and searched the BT registers without success.
I was wondering if there was another way round ie for example lists of ships with the captains name ?

This site mentions the ship,
https://www.greenshieldscowie.com/pdf...NIGHT_LINE.pdf
Remington 1863 Gross Tons 999 Iron ship.
B: Smith and Rodger, Glasgow. 1863: C.G. Cowie
and Co., Liverpool. 1888: renamed Schiffbek. 1898: J.N.
Sorensen, Christiania, renamed Dina. 1909: broken up.
It says there are voyage returns but I cannot see where they are kept.

In what record do you have him as 3rd Mate? (is this a marriage certificate?)
Do you have him in any record as Master?
Does he appear in any census returns, or was he always at sea?
Have you tried the Mercantile Navy List?
Have you tried Lloyds Register of Shipping?
If he was apprenticed in the Merchant navy, try BT150 at TNA
Try browsing TNA's resarch guides for other ideas - click on the links prefixed Merchant Seamen, or Merchant Shipping
