Hi Everyone
Can anyone please help I'm looking for a Hugh Houghton thought to have died at sea about 1917 on the I>G>I>index but no other information given only his birth around 1885.
I Know he married a Sarah Houghton and had children which have been traced but can find nothing on him being at sea, it is said he was a skipper but whether this is true or not I don't know.
have tried various sites like Mariners, findmypast, my heritage, myrelatives but nothing.
Does anyone have any more avenues I could persue
Thanks paris81

Hi paris81,
If the kids have been traced do you have any of their birth certificates? It should record his occupation. It will also give the maiden name of the mother which may assist to find the marriage and again his occupation.
Also, the birth index does not record a Hugh Houghton born 1885. There are four of them born in 1883, one in 1888 and one in 1889 however. (Searched 1885 +/- 5 years)

I have just checked GenesReunited and there is a person looking for a Hugh Houghton born 1885 in Wales - unless that is you of course.

Welcome to the B-G forums
The IGI has very few deaths.

The birth certificate of one of the children should include the mother's maiden name. Using this you can then hopefully trace their marriage certificate. This will include Hugh's age; and father's name and occupation. Using this you may be able to find them on a census return and so also locate his entry on the GRO index - so confirming when he was born, rather than going by guesswork. If you are not sure how to look for certificates, please ask.I Know he married a Sarah Houghton and had children which have been traced
If looking for a death for this chap, don't forget to try the Probate Calendar which should be available at your local County Record Office - it includes entries for wills and admons.
If he was an officer, any record in the Mercantile Navy List?but can find nothing on him being at sea, it is said he was a skipper but whether this is true or not I don't know.
How certain are you about the year of death? There is no match on the CWGC (Two Merchant Navy Houghtons are listed, but no Hugh)

Hugh Houghton
HI Everyone
Thanks for all the advice.
to begin Sarah's maiden name was also Houghton on Ivy's birth certificate but it is belived Hugh went to sea after Ivy,s birth.
There are 2 marriages listed one in 1909 Worcester, the other in 1910 Powys.
I have sent for the 1909 cert and I'm waiting for it at the moment but didn't find the 1910 one until early yesterday and Ivy was born in Bridgend Powys so the 1910 seems the likely one but sent for the 1909 one because that is where Sarah died.
I found his death on familysearch IGI Index and it stated 1917 died at sea there were 2 Hugh Houghton's there and one was with a wife named Sarah.
And I'm the same person on Genes looking for Houghton,
[QUOTE]
Looking at the replies there is a quote on there which reads,If this is a member submitted entry, treat it with caution, have I done anything wrong for this quote to be added to my thread,[QUOTE]
Thanks again everyone Paris

Hi Paris,
I think it may be best to wait for the marriage certificate and what it contains.
No, you did nothing wrong. What Geoffers was trying to say was that the member submitted entries (and having looked at the IGI that is what this entry is) are more likely to be a guess by someone rather than an extraction of a fact from a source such as a parish record etc.
Member submitted entries may be totally correct but may also be entirely incorrect. Take a look at the IGI section of Brit Gen here for some useful tips and explanations.

Okedoke - does Ivy's birth certificate show her mum as just Sarah, or with two forenames? - e.g. Sarah Anne, Sarah Jane, etc.

The IGI can be a useful tool, but don't take it as always being correct. A lot of the stuff on there submitted by members is very inaccurate, to put it mildly.I found his death on familysearch IGI Index and it stated 1917 died at sea there were 2 Hugh Houghton's there and one was with a wife named Sarah.
Nothing at all. I've added several quotes in my reply as there were several parts to your message - I've added my responses after each quote just to give the responses relevance - breaking down messages into bits also helps my poor and aged brain to sort things out.Looking at the replies there is a quote on there which reads,If this is a member submitted entry, treat it with caution, have I done anything wrong for this quote to be added to my thread,

Have you tried the "Deaths at Sea" section on the National Archives site?

Died at sea
Thanks to everyone who have helped me,
to Geoffers,To ProcatIvy's birth certificate shows her mother's name as Sarah Jane Houghton, and the reason I said there were 2 marriages is that Jenni in Wales looked at some parish registers and told me there was another marriage at Powys in 1919 and were going to send for both, but thought it was me who couldn't find the Powys one, so have just sent fot the 1909 one instead Thanks for the adviceMarie cI'm waiting for certificate to come, and I think that is my only way forward, Thanks for the helpThanks again Paristhanks for that info , It may well be but will do a bit more searching first,
