Apart from searching at the British Library site does anyone know of a web site where it is possible to identify local newspapers published back in past centuiries?

Hello Ron
Not exactly answering your question, but an email to the record office for the areas(s) you are interested in, with dates, would no doubt result in a list, at least of the papers that they have.

Try the GENUKI site at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Newspapers.html You should find plenty of help there
Best wishes

I had looked at the GenUKI site before by county but that was less helpful than what you found AnnB. Colin I like your idea as well. Perhaps this is one of those little sub categories that Rod (When he comes back from holiday) might find a home for. I am sure others have would be interested.

Useful Links
A site that is generally very useful for beginners, especially but not exclusively for those reseaching in Wales, is Gareth's Help Page at
http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html
Click on Newspapers and there is a link to the on line British Library catalogue search page at http://prodigi.bl.uk/nlcat/welcome.asp
Enter a county or a town under Place and it will list all the newspapers for that area
To find out if your local library holds copies (and find out what other genealogical holdings they have) try http://www.familia.org.uk/Last edited by Sue Mackay; 24-01-2005 at 7:41 PM. Reason: Correcting URL

Useful Book
There's also a useful book - "Local Newspapers 1720-1920" compiled by Jeremy Gibson, Brett Langston and Brenda W. Smith, ISBN 1860061575; this is one of the Gibson Guides published by the Federation of Family History Societies. With these details you should be able to get it from any bookseller, but you can also order direct from the FFHS at http://www.genfair.com/
The book covers newspapers published in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, and lists holdings at the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale, and at local libraries around the country.
