Nathan's born in Launceston, Tasmania

I do not know if his 2nd wife Susan Allgate died or he married his 3rd wife whilst still married to Esther in London and Susan in Tasmania, there are no records of a Joseph Nathan divorcing.

As you would have seen, there is not record of a marriage to Susan in Tasmanian database, nor a request to marry in the relevant index, so there would be no problem marrying Eliza. This marriage would not be considered bigamous, as after seven years abroad he could consider his first marriage annulled, a divorce was not legally necessary.

Susan does not appear to have had more children with anyone else in Tasmania or Victoria, so probably has died. Her death may not have been registered, or registered under another surname as she could also have been married before too (another reason why they never married) - the birth index always records the maiden name of the mother.

Just found this but I am really hesitant about it as the age is wrong. if you purchased the certificate it should contain the names of the children and his spouse. It can be obtained from here:

THANKYOU so very much, I haven't had time to look at it in detail, I did try and look at victoria index on line so it might just be worth a few quid to down-load a certificate. I must have been looking wrong.

Just a quick note/question, If a convict was married in England and didn't divorce his wife called he legally marry 7 years after leaving britain, i.e. he left in 1838 and either married his first wife in 1846 or 1852? I do feel sorry for the left behind wife!

It was $18 or what ever that is in pounds well spent, its the right one, I was typing in Simon not Simeon and Joseph not Jos.

He was born in Launceston and his wife was Elizabeth Day and it lists his children. All the dates are out. According to him he was married 31 years to Elizabeth day but it was about 50, his date on one of his daughters is over 40. There were only two families of Launceston called Nathan that I could see and he was the only Simon and Joseph. I beleive the other family were non Convicts.

Now it would be great to find some living descendants!

Off I go for the next adventure!!!

Keep in mind of course that the information on a death certificate is only as accurate as the informant can make it (or sometimes wants to make it). This one sounds like there was some wild guessing going on.

Large numbers of wives and children joined their husbands in Tasmania - one of my ancestors came out with four children to join her husband after the expiry of a 14 year sentence (reduced to 10).

Sarah Nathan was not a relative of mine, I was just helping a great man called Geoff, I hope you don't mind have past your information onto Geoff (from NZ) who is the x Grandson of Joseph Nathan, Sarah's father from England. He has a wonderful story about Adoption, founding out about his real Jewish Background, DNA testing, finding cousins in USA, ISrael etc. etc which I am proud to say I helped him with.

Geoff is not a family member but as I helped him he made me feel like a long lost cousin.
