I am a new member, and the Forum looks very much up my street.
Can someone help me. My great grandfather was in the Royal Marines Artillery during the late Victorian early Edwardian Period. His photo tells me he was probably a senior NCO or similar status. He was stationed mostly at Chatham, then at Eastney.
He is described in the Census's at the time as a 'Schoolmaster R.M.'
Can anyone advise me further.
Yours in anticipation,
HHarnett

Hello, Welcome to the forum.

If you click on the link below, it shows a list of RM & RN people in Lincolnshire with their positions in the relevant force. If you go down to the name of Mackinder, this gentleman is shown as a schoolmaster in the RM, in the Royal Artillery.
I did a quick Google and found a mention that a schoolmaster was usually a commissioned officer from the warrant rank.
Hope this is of some help.

Another thought. Have you tried the National Archives? They hold whatever records there are regarding the Forces including the RM. You might strike lucky and find a record for him.
My father was in the RM in the early 1920's to the 1940s and I managed to obtain his record. I realise that you are looking at an earlier period, but it's worth a try.

Just a small point, to avoid confusion. Post #2 includes this: "in the RM, in the Royal Artillery."
The Royal Marine Artillery (RMA) was not part of the Royal Artillery, but a separate part of the Royal Marines, the other part being the Royal Marine Light Infantry (RMLI).
