Places in Gloucester/Gloucestershire?

please? I would like to search for a birth reference on 1837.com for Samuel SHEPHERD, according to censuses, he should have been born about 1858.

On two censuses he gives his birthplace as Staple Hill, the third one says Dunning. The town or County bit says, Gloucester/ Gloucs/Glos, so I don't know whether it's the town or County.

I've looked at Genuki for Reg Districts, Parishes etc. and looked at the Genuki page for Gloucestershire ...... but I can't find either Staple Hill or Dunning listed anywhere.

Can anyone please tell me where else I can search?

Indeed. It looks like part of Mangotsfield parish which was in the Keynsham registration district.

Ok this is going to sound bizzare but living in Bristol it figures.

If the enumerator had listened to him say "down in Gloustershire" because of the heavy accent here, it could be misinterpreted as Dunnin, Gloustershire very easily. If he had said Downend it would have been heard as Dunend. DOnt you just love this Thick accent :-) (I notice more I think as I come from Surrey)

Staple Hill is an original Victorian town, built over a sleepy hamlet,it has a maze of victorian streets. You will find the area still very much the same as in the victorian Era, Here are some photos http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/...313&uid=570503

It is on the East side of Bristol and is now in the county of Bristol, but it is more likely that the reg district was Keynsha as Peter remarked.

My thanks to all of you for your help, I clicked on the map link you gave Myth and typed in Staple Hill, then I clicked on the pictures link and had a look at the area, really good photos on there!

I had to giggle about the 'thick' accent making Downend sound like Dunning ..... Samuel is my Gt.Grandfather and moved to Castleford in Yorkshire.

Soooo ..... you get one thick accent, misheard by probably a 'thick' enumerator who also has a 'thick' Yorksher accent .... and Bob's your Uncle!

I couldn't find the birth ref for Samuel SHEPHERD, after searching for two years and I had already had a look for him in the 1871 Census under this name, using my freebie 30 day access to Ancestry.com.

As pointed out to me by a friend, although my family always had this spelling of the name, it doesn't mean that everybody else spelt it the same!

I found him today, along with his two brothers ......
