Please, can anyone help ? I have discovered just this week through a contact on Curious Fox that an ancestor of mine died following an accident on the railway in the Sheffield area. He has sent accounts from newspapers of the time - 1850 - with brief accounts of the accident and the Coroner's Report, and a copy of the death certificate.
In 1851, his widow was described as 'Annuitant', and I wonder if this means she was in receipt of an allowance from the railway company. I have entered a number of searches but not turned up anything useful. Are such records available and if so, where should I look ?
Thank you Eileen![]()

There's a research guide to railway staff records on the National Archives site at
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchive...sLeafletID=124 which might give you a few leads.
Have you tried searching for the company he worked for, to see if there is a historical society for them? I would imagine they should know what records are available and where they are. Some of them, such as the LNWR Society (website at
http://www.lnwrs.org.uk/ )
have details of various staff online.

To Barbara Thank you. This is a totally new line of research for me - I will follow up your suggestions and report back for the benefit of other researchers.

There's a Railways Ancestors FHS if it's of any use or interest to you. Also IIRC there's a rootsweb list dedicated to the subject - can't recall the name. Might be worth looking through the list archives.
When you've decided what the comapny was it will also be worth checking A2A.
