if anyone has a copy of the trade directories for the Manchester area for the period 1820-1860, could you please see if there are any entries for "Reuben Herbert" (should be commercial traveller / cloth / cotton industry). ??

In case you aren't aware there are a few early directories available on the 'historical directories' web-site; it should turn up using a search engine and it's free.

I think you're unlikely to find commercial travellers listed, I tried Slater's 1848 directory of Manchester and couldn't see him there (no commercial travellers recorded).
