    Default Emigration to Quebec

Many people had assisted emigration from Saxthorpe/Corpusty,norfolk,in the mid-19th century. Are there any records of names from that era that can be accessed?

The records are now stored in The National Archives at Kew in document class MH12. They are sorted by place (Union and then parish) and date.

This search of TNA's catalogue gives you the document references for the area from 1840-1860

The documents are very useful and well worth hunting out.

You are likely to find, the original correspondence applying for the loan, confirmation of the grant. On the back of a couple of documents I've found the name of the ship, dtae and palce of embarkation - so don't just look at the front of the correspondence. The records also include the names, geneder, ages of all those wishing to emigrate along with occupation, amount of relief received in the previous 12 months, intended place of emigration (usually very brief) and some short comments about the applicants - these can be nice ('good worker, encouraged to emigrate by relatives already living in the area') to the less encouraging ('an idle and worthless person').
