    Default Sherwood Forest Connection ?

My Uncle Edward was part of a special unit from New Zealand that was sent to England during WW II to mill trees in Sherwood Forest to obtain wood for the famous DeHavilland Mosquito fighter-bomber.

I was hoping that others might know of the activities of this unit. The only story I know of was told to me by my father. Apparently the unit was presented to King George and on a dare, one of the men approached King George and bowed, tipped his hat and said "Gidday my King". Much to the horror of the British Officers present.

Any help / info would be appreciated.

    regards
    Neville

Unhappy The "Other" Aircraft Company in Hertfordshire

    Hi Neville
Loath as I am to mention that other Aircraft Company in Hertfordshire (I did my apprenticeship with Handley Page- the First British company to be formed exclusively for the design and construction of aircraft- based just down the road at Radlett, were arch rivals with the lot at Harfield! ) you could try contacting the deHavilland Aircraft Heritage Centre & Mosquito Aircraft Museum through dhamt@stride98.freeserve.co.uk . If they don't know, your query may arouse their interest.
    Good Luck
    Peter
ps Last year saw the end of an era when, after 86 years the last HP designed aircraft left the service of the RAF, back to 1915 if you count the RAF's predecessors.

in case anyone else wants the same information

    http://www.nzetc.org/etexts/WH2Engr/index.html

He was obviously part of the Forestry Group in the RNZ Engineers
    during WW II
