Mark,
Can you post an image or give a census reference, so that others can look at the problem name? There are more Llans in Breconshire than you can shake a stick at, as I'm sure you know.

Well it certainly didn't help that the checker put his black check mark right through the middle. It clearly ends in ...nach, so I wonder if it could be Llanfrynach (though I suspect written with a v instead of f)

I agree with Sue. After doing a parish check, I couldn't see another which would be a match.

Mark,
What is it you're after, apart from reading the placename? I think I can see the family in 1891 (New Tredegar) and 1901 (Gelligaer), but Catherine and Elizabeth Ann have disappeared and Rhys/Rees is married to Margaret. Did you know that and are you interested?

Hi John' Thanks for the reply.I've been trying to find out my great'great grandfathers' wife surname and where she was from.I found them in the 1881 census His name was Rhys lloyd DOB 1845 from Dowlais' his wife was Catherine lloyd after marrage DOB 1854.They had two children David Thomas' and Elizabeth Ann.I've tried looking in the 1891 and 1901 census but no luck Thanks.Mark

Mark,
From FreeBMD, I have found two possible marriages (both under the name Rees and none with Rhys):
Dec 1871 Rees Lloyd Merthyr Tydfil vol 11a p 703 (Catherine Fisher on same page)
Sep 1875 Rees Lloyd Merthyr Tydfil vol 11a p 616 (Catherine Walters on the same page)
The later one looks more likely but you must judge.
From the same source, deaths
Sep 1883 Catherine Lloyd aged 30 Merthyr Tydfil vol 11a p 244
Marriages
Sep 1885 Rees Lloyd Llanelly vol 11a p 1020 (Margaret John on same page)
Census 1891 RG12 / 4357 / f 33 p 26
Elliott Town? Bedwellty, Mon
Rees Lloyd Head M 46 unclear occ born Glamorgan, both languages
Margt Lloyd Wife M 38 Glamorgan, both
David T? Lloyd Son S 14 Engine man Glamorgan, both
Jesse Lloyd Dau 3?, Glamorgan, both
David John, Boarder S 30 Sawyer? Glamorgan, both
Census 1901 RG13 / 5021 / f 102 p 24
9 New Gas St, Tir Phil, Pontlottyn, Gelligaer, Glam
Rees Lloyd Head M 56 Machine fitter in colliery, worker, Glam Merthyr Tydfil, both
Margaret Lloyd Wife M 48 Carms Kidwelly, both
David T Lloyd Son S 24 Pitman in colliery (below), worker, Glam Merthyr Tydfil, both
Jesse T Lloyd Adpt Dau 13 at school, Carms Kidwelly, both
That all seems plausible to me but it's rather circumstantial at present. If you could go back to earlier censuses for both the possible Catherines, you might see which was born in an appropriate part of Breconshire. Then the next step would be to buy the marriage certificate and keep going back from there.
Best of luck
John
