Your ancestor seems likely to have been a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC), who were the police force for all Ireland from 1816 - 1922.

The original records for the RIC are in the Public Record Office in Kew. Copies are also held by the Police Service for Northern Ireland (PSNI) museum in Belfast. I don't know what PRO charge but PSNI will conduct searches for ancestors for £15 per time. Go to the PSNI website (www.psni.police.uk) for further information on how to do that and what information may be available on your ancestor, if his records can be located.
