    Default Evans/Long

I've hit a brick wall looking for my great-grandparents. I have my grandmother's birth certificate (1908 Crickhowell, sub district Beaufort) and it gives her father's name as John Evans (coal miner) and mother's name of Mary Jane Evans (formerly Long). I don't know if they were married in 1901 to check the census and of course there are literally hundreds of John Evans's in Monmouthshire!

I think my grandmother was from quite a large family but the only siblings I can remember are Polly and Harold, but whether they were older or younger I don't know.

I have found a record of a John Evans (coal miner), wife Mary Jane in the 1901 census for Glamorgan but as both names are quite common as well as the occupation, is there any way to find further evidence that these are the people I'm looking for.

How do I move on from here?

There is a marriage Jun Qtr 1900 in Thornbury Reg Dist (Gloucestershire) where John Evans & Mary Jane Long are on the same page ref Vol 6a Page 525.

    Could this be them?

Thank you. Mmm .. didn't even consider that I may have English blood! I know that she died somewhere between my sister's birth and mine, ie 1947 - 1957 so maybe if I could find the record of her death, her birthplace will be mentioned ... or was that information not listed then?

Where did she die? Can you be more precise regarding the year as there are several Mary J Evans deaths.

The last known address I have for her is Beaufort, but that was in 1908 as recorded on my grandmother's birth certificate. I've found a death for a Mary J Evans in Abergavenny (which is my place of birth) in 1954, aged 81, which would tie in with the information you found. I've applied to the GRO for the certificate so I hope that there's a name I recognise who registered the death.

Hope it's the right one - seems probable as it was where the family was. I looked at some GRO pages and started with 1847 and found 2 Mary J Evans deaths at the correct age in Wales on the first page I came to!!!! Looked as if it could have been an impossible task.

    Good luck
